The LEGO® Serious Play® method is a facilitated meeting, communication and problem-solving process in which participants are led through a series of questions, probing deeper and deeper into the subject. Participants build their individual 3D LEGO® models in response to the facilitator’s questions using specially selected LEGO® elements. These 3D models serve as a basis for group discussion, knowledge sharing, problem solving and decision-making.
The LEGO® Serious Play® method is a technique, which improves group problem solving. By communicating through LEGO models people use and learn through their visual, auditory and kinesthetic senses. This method invites participants to learn and listen, and it provides all participants with an equal voice and a shared language regardless of culture or position.
The use of the 3D models as visual aid helps participants to concentrate, as well as memorise complex topics and dependencies between different elements. This provides larger capacity to develop the ideas further.
The method will guide you into a free and honest dialogue. Tangible constructions allow groups to have conversations that flow without the fear of treading on personal feelings. Participants will experience that the real issues are addressed and, ultimately, they will be able to see things through the eyes of their colleagues – and have them view the picture through theirs.
During a facilitated workshop you will be building models with LEGO® bricks, giving them meaning through story-making, and developing mutual understanding of a critical topic – a process which deepens understanding, sharpens insight, and socially “bonds” together the group as it “plays” together.
When used on a regular basis, teams learn to listen and communicate more openly, to engage their imagination more in problem solving, and to approach their work with increased confidence, commitment and insight.
The use of LEGO® Serious Play® method enables groups to take a speedy shortcut to the core of issues. The bricks work as a catalyst – and when used for building metaphors, they trigger processes that groups were previously unaware of.
The LEGO® Serious Play® method allows groups to explore the relationships and connections between different elements of a wider system, such as a large project, customer experience, organisational culture or strategy and hence strengthen their decision-making and collective learning.
The use of LEGO® Serious Play® method helps teams to build a strong commitment to shared goals.
